D is for Diving Deeply, Decompressing And Diving Deeply Again  

Different people work in different ways. One approach is for them to dive deeply and immerse themselves in the task. Becoming fully absorbed can be deeply rewarding, but at some stage they may need to take a break.

Coming to the surface, they can go through their equivalent of decompression. Refreshing the body and soul can also help ideas to incubate and sometimes lead to fresh insights.

Feeling rejuvenated, a person may then feel ready to dive deeply again and continue to explore. They can continue to do superb work, find solutions to challenges and achieve their picture of success.

Decompression is vital and different people do this in different ways. They may take time out, sleep, walk, listen to music or do something completely different.

Great workers often set aside time to stabilise and cleanse their system. This helps them to regain strength and see things more clearly. They can then keep going deeper and add greater richness to their work.

Looking back, can you think of a time when aimed to do good work by going through these stages? What did you do to dive deeply, decompress and then dive deeply again?

You may have done this when studying for an exam, recovering from an illness, playing a sport or writing a book. You may have done it when turning around a business, doing a creative project or tackling a specific challenge.

Diving Deeply

What are the activities into which you love to dive deeply? You may do this when playing music, exercising, doing scientific research, gardening, renovating a house or doing another activity.

What are the steps you take to dive deeply? You may gather information and then set aside a block of time to become completely immersed in the task.

Maria Montessori, the educator, said that children often learn by becoming totally absorbed in an activity. They enjoy the adventure of learning and then set a specific goal. They dive deeply and experience a sense of achievement when reaching their aim. Many adults go through a similar process when pursuing a stimulating project.

Looking back at your life, when have you gone through these stages? Perhaps you started by settling on something you wanted to achieve. You may have aimed to write an article, do a piece of gardening, master a skill, learn a language or whatever.

Becoming completely absorbed in the subject, you embarked on a journey of adventure. You kept working hard and enjoyed a sense of fulfilment when reaching the destination.

Imagine that you have thrown yourself completely into exploring a theme or doing an activity. At a certain point you may feel overloaded and need time to rebalance. Certainly you can carry on working, but sometimes it may be useful to surface and go on to the next stage.

Decompressing

Different people choose different ways to rest their body and soul. One approach is to rest, reflect and refocus. Let’s explore these themes.

Resting

Imagine that you are deeply absorbed in an activity. How can you tell when it may be good to take a break? What are the warning signs? What do you do then to rest and recover? What do you do to regain your energy?

You may take a short breather, eat something or take a nap. You may go for a walk or sit down and contemplate. You may do a completely different activity and let your mind wander.

Reflecting

What do you do to reflect? Different people do this in different ways. Some have a structured framework for clarifying their thoughts. Others allow their minds to drift.

You will have your own approach. Looking at the task in hand, however, you may aim to make sense of the following things.

What has happened.

What you have done well and what you can do better in the future.

What you plan to do next.

Beginning to get new ideas, you may then go on to the next stage.

Refocusing

Looking ahead, you begin to refocus on the task in hand. One approach is to do some mental rehearsal. There are many models for taking this step. Here is one approach.

Imagine that you have regained your energy and rehearsed what you are going to do next. It will then be time to move on to the next stage.

Diving Deeply Again

Imagine that you feel refreshed and have refocused. You can then dive deeply again. Building on what you have rehearsed, you may want to go through the following stages. You can do superb work, find solutions to challenges and work towards achieving the picture of success.

Superb Work

Looking at the task in hand, how can you perform superb work? How can you build on your strengths and manage the consequences of any weaknesses? How can you maintain high standards?

Solutions

How can you stay calm when faced by challenges? How can you anticipate and prevent potential difficulties? How can you find solutions to these difficulties if, despite everything, they do happen?

Success

How can you keep doing your best? How can you encourage yourself and other people on the journey? How can you keep doing the basics and, when appropriate, add the brilliance? How can you do whatever is required to achieve the picture of success?

There are many ways to do fine work. One approach is to go through the stages of diving deeply, decompressing and then diving deeply again. You will, of course, do this in your own way.
