Looking back on your life, when have you chosen to focus on enjoyment rather than entrapment? What were the results of making this choice?

You may have chosen to spend time with people who give you positive energy rather than those who spread negative energy.

You may have chosen to study a subject you loved rather than one that had higher academic status.

You may have chosen to do satisfying work that paid an okay salary rather than unsatisfying work that paid a higher salary.

People make choices every minute. Each choice does, of course, have consequences.

One person may pursue a path they believe in, but they also recognise it will involve challenges. They may learn, however, how to build on the pluses and manage the minuses.

Another person may be tempted to follow a path that promises great prizes. They may then come to realise that this involves paying a crippling price. This can lead to feeling trapped.

If you wish, try tackling the exercise on this theme. Looking back on your life and work, this invites you to do the following things.

Describe a specific time when you chose enjoyment rather than entrapment.

Describe the specific things you did then to choose enjoyment.

Describe the specific results that happened – the pluses and any minuses – from choosing enjoyment rather than entrapment.

People love to do things they enjoy, but they also realise this can involve sweat. They do not mind working hard, however, if they believe in the activity.

There are many forms of entrapment. These include becoming addicted to worrying, comparing yourself to others or going into debt.

Some people who appear successful, for example, sometimes feel stuck doing soulless work to support a certain kind of lifestyle. They yearn to refocus on enjoyment rather than entrapment.

The positive news, however, is that some people grow more content as they get older. They then embody the characteristics of people who are happy. Here are some of those traits.
