E is for Enjoyment Spreaders rather than Enjoyment Suppressors

There are many ways to look at people. One approach is to see them as enjoyment spreaders or enjoyment suppressors.

Some people believe in spreading enjoyment. They want to encourage people and enable them to live fulfilling lives.

They often believe in encouraging diversity and enabling people to express themselves – providing that this does not hurt other people. They believe in expanding people’s possibilities.

Some people believe in suppressing enjoyment. They believe that their views are right and want to impose these on other people.

They discourage diversity and don’t want people to express themselves. They ignore the hurt this can cause other people. They believe in limiting people’s possibilities.

Looking back, can you think of a situation when you aimed to spread enjoyment? This could have been in your personal or professional life.

You may have felt upset about a particular event and noticed that others felt down. Being a positive realist, however, you aimed to help people in a practical way.

You may have encouraged them to appreciate their assets, do simple things and enjoy life. You may then have helped them to build on their strengths, set specific goals and get some early successes.

If you wish, try tackling the exercise on this theme. This invites you to do the following things.

Describe a specific situation in the past when you aimed to spread enjoyment.

Describe the specific things you did to try to spread enjoyment.

Describe the specific benefits of taking these steps.

Enjoyment Spreaders

Different people spread enjoyment in different ways. They may do so by acting as encouraging friends, parents or educators. They may do so by acting as creative artists, singers, musicians, pioneers or in other roles.

Enjoyment spreaders want everybody to flourish. They believe in being kind and helping others. They want to inspire people, create beauty and pass on knowledge.

Such people aim to create win-win solutions. They demonstrate humility and care for the future of humanity. They aim to build self-sustaining systems that support people and the planet.

Kiran Bir Sethi is somebody who spreads enjoyment. She created the movement called Design For Change. This encourages children to clarify their ideas for building a better world and put these into action.

Below is an excerpt from its website and a video about the work. You can discover more via the following link.

Children and adults learn through the Design for Change Challenge that “I Can” are the two most powerful words a person can believe. Children who have discovered this are changing their world.

This year, Design for Change reaches 34 countries and over 300,000 schools inspiring hundreds of thousands of children, their teachers and parents, to celebrate the fact change is possible and that they can lead that change!

The challenge asks students to do four very simple things: Feel, Imagine, Do and Share.

Children are dreaming up and leading brilliant ideas all over the world, from challenging age-old superstitions in rural communities, to earning their own money to finance school computers to solving the problem of heavy school bags – children are proving that they have what it takes to be able to ‘design’ a future that is desired.

Enjoyment Suppressors

Different people suppress enjoyment in different ways. They may do so by spreading misery in their daily lives. They may act as repressive dictators, politicians or preachers.

Enjoyment suppressors want a few people to flourish. They want others to act as cogs in the wheel. They want to dominate through cruelty, fear and hurting others. They aim to intimidate people and blame scapegoats rather than find positive solutions.

Such people aim to come out on top and create win-lose situations. They demonstrate hubris and have little concern for the future of humanity. They aim to build systems that reward a few but are unsustainable for people and the planet.

The elections of 2016 meant that several enjoyment suppressors were voted into political power. They claimed to represent the will of the people, even though they represented a minority of their populations.

Each person will make their own decisions regarding how to deal with these forces. If a person allows such leaders to paralyse them through fear, however, then the dictators have won. Another approach is to enjoy life, encourage others and plant seeds of hope.

Richard Sheridan had already taken this approach by creating Menlo Innovations. This involved building a culture based on the concept of joy.
