The Art of Strengths Coaching

R is for Rehearsing Properly And Then Delivering The Required Results In Reality

Great workers rehearse properly and relish going into their version of the arena. Clicking into action, they concentrate fully. They then do their best to deliver the required results in reality.

Some people enjoy the rehearsal but don’t perform in reality. They don’t follow their disciplines and can get distracted by dramas. They may allow worries to overcome them and then not do their best on the day.

Great workers perform well for certain reasons. They often build on their strengths and follow their successful style. They then put themselves into situations they find stimulating. Sometimes these are positive situations; sometimes these are pressure situations.

Such workers rehearse pursuing their chosen strategies. Moving into action, they perform superb work and maintain high standards. They find creative solutions to challenges and do their best to achieve the picture of success.

Looking at your own life, can you think of a specific activity where you rehearse properly and then deliver the required results in reality? This could be in your personal or professional life..

You may do this when encouraging a person, teaching a class, running a mentoring session or leading a team. You may do it when playing a sport, performing on stage, managing a crisis or doing another activity.

If you wish, try tackling the exercise on this theme. This invites you to do the following things.

Different people perform well in real situations by using different approaches. Let’s explore some of these models.

Some people are addicted to putting themselves into situations where they feel alive and get an adrenaline rush. They then use their ability and awareness to achieve the desired results. Resting for a while, they then look forward to the next opportunity to achieve the emotional high.

Some people put themselves into situations where they feel in their element – at ease and yet able to excel. They have good radar in such situations and seem to know what will happen before it happens. They expand their repertoire of skills for achieving the required results. They are then more able to be effective and deliver excellence.

People who take this step are often doing an activity they find fascinating and have a feeling for – they are good at it. They feel passionately about and then practice until they can achieve peak performance.

Wayne Gretzky, the great ice hockey player, described how he took this route. Interviewed by Michael Murphy for the book In The Zone: Transcendent experiences in sports, Wayne explained how he practiced during his childhood.

I’d get up in the morning, skate from 7.00 to 8.30, go to school, come home at 3.30, stay on the ice until my mom insisted I come in for dinner, eat in my skates and then go back out until 9.00.

On Saturdays and Sundays, we’d have huge games, but night time became my time. It was sort of an unwritten rule around the neighbourhood that I would be out there by myself or with my dad.

I would just handle the puck in and out of those empty detergent bottles my dad set up as pylons.

Then I’d set up targets in the net and try to hit them with forehands, backhands, whatever. Then I’d do it all again, except this time with a tennis ball, which is much harder to handle.

I was so addicted that my dad had big kids come over to play against me. And when the kids wanted to go home, I’d beg them to stay longer.

I suppose that is how I was always able to do well against bigger guys later on. That’s all I could play against.

Some people have a positive attitude and see challenging situations as an opportunity to put their principles into practise. They start by preparing properly. Going into the arena, they aim to keep following their principles, perform work and deliver positive results. They do their best to achieve the picture of success.

Some people believe in always doing their best whatever the occasion. They aim to do what they believe-in, keep doing the basics and then, when appropriate, add the brilliance. They keep following these habits on both small and big occasions.

Some people reframe a challenging situation as a project and the chance to do some creative problem solving. Draining themselves of emotion, they clarify what they can control. They then focus on clarity, creativity and concrete results.

Clarity: they clarify the real results to achieve. Creativity: they clarify the choices, consequences and creative solutions. Concrete Results: they commit to their chosen route and do their best to deliver the desired concrete results.

Some people choose to build on their strengths, follow their successful style and set specific goals. They then put themselves into stimulating situations where they can stretch themselves and, providing they do their best, have a chance of achieving success. These can be positive or pressure situations.

Going into the situation, they aim to do superb work and maintain high professional standards. They find solutions to challenges and focus on constant improvement. Such people sometimes add that touch of class to reach their goals. This results in them expanding the kinds of situations in which they can deliver success.

Great workers pursue their own individual approaches to doing good work. Whatever approach they use, however, they keep reading reality. They focus on: a) The specific things that are working and how they can do more of these; b) The specific things they can do better and how. They then do their best to achieve the goals.

Let’s return to the specific activity in which you rehearse properly and then deliver results in reality. How can you continue to develop when doing this activity?
