Imagine you are a leader. There are many models for getting the right people in your team. One approach is to get the right blend of Rocks and Rockers.

Rocks are people you can rely on who form the backbone of the team. Rockers often add the zest and creativity. Some people demonstrate both qualities. Let’s explore how to build such a team.

Rocks

Who are the Rocks in your team? If you wish, write the names of these people.

What do they bring to the team? What are the qualities they demonstrate? How can you encourage these people?

“These are the first people I look for when building a team, because they provide the foundation,” said one leader.

“They care deeply for the work. They can be relied upon to make sure that they – and the people in their teams – consistently deliver a high level of performance.

“The Rocks are often calm during crises. They calm people down, provide a sense of perspective and help people to find solutions to challenges.

“The successful teams I have been in have always had a high percentage of such people.”

Rockers

Who are the Rockers in your team? Such people sometimes add the zest, creativity and touch of magic that helps the team to do great work.

Write the names of these people. What do they bring to the team? What are the qualities they demonstrate? How can you encourage these people?

“Rocks form the foundation, but Rockers often add an extra dimension,” said the leader mentioned earlier.

“Such people need to be professional, however, and encourage others in the team. People who just want do their own thing and, in the process, hurt others just become reprobates.

“Rockers are often fun to have around. They need to recognise, however, that others often provide the platform for them to perform.

“Sometimes such people rise to the occasion and deliver outstanding results when it matters.”

Good leaders make clear contracts with such people. The Rockers must be prepared to act in a professional way, encourage others and make their best contributions to the team.
