There are many ways to help people. One approach is to support the positive spirit in individuals, teams and organisations. It is then to provide practical tools they can use to achieve success.

What is your approach to encouraging people? How do you enable them to achieve their goals? How has your approach evolved over the years?

Looking at my own work, I have almost come a full circle. During the 1960s it involved encouraging people to have a positive attitude and take responsibility for shaping their future lives.

The approach combined elements of humanistic psychology and existential psychology. It also employed principles followed in successful recovery programmes.

During the early 1970s I moved more towards helping people to build on their strengths and do satisfying work. Focusing on peak performance, this also involved helping people to build super teams and superb organisations.

Much of the work has been with business and has been results focused. This sound hard line, but actually the aim has been to support, strengthen and sustain the positive spirit in people. It has then been to provide tools that they can use to achieve ongoing success.

What does this mean in action? Below are some of the questions I have used to follow this approach. Take the best and leave the rest. You will, of course, have your own approach to encouraging people.
