
There are many ways to do fine work. One approach is to focus on a specific activity where you have the motivation to do the maintenance and then do your best to make magic.
Different people aim to follow this approach in different activities. They may aim to do it when encouraging a person, teaching a class, playing a sport, doing creative work, leading a team or doing another activity.
Imagine that you want to follow elements of this approach in your own way. This can involve focusing on the following themes.
Motivation
Great workers often focus on an activity they feel motivated to do. They then translate this into aiming to achieve a specific goal.
What are the activities that you love to do? What are those where you feel in your element – at ease and yet able to excel? What are those where your motivation rating is at least 8+/10?
Different people give different answers to these questions. Here are some of the things they mention.
I feel really motivated:
To help people in my work as a counsellor … To help my students to keep developing … To design software that simplifies people’s lives … To continue my work in the mountain rescue team.
To make music that inspires people … To organise marvellous events … To refurbish beautiful buildings … To show people how it is possible to run sustainable projects that are profitable.
Imagine that you have chosen to focus on a specific activity you want to pursue. You may then want translate that into working towards a specific goal.
Much depends, of course, on the activity you want to do. You may want to write an article, teach a seminar, renovate a house, coach a sports team or do another activity.
Later we will look at how you can do the necessary maintenance and do your best to make magic. Before then, however, the first step can be to do the following exercise.

Maintenance
Imagine that you are pursuing your chosen activity and working towards a specific goal. The next step will be to focus on doing the maintenance – the basic tasks that must be done – to reach the goal.
The kind of tasks you need to do will, of course, depend on your chosen activity. Bearing this in mind, however, one approach may be to take the following steps. You may aim:
To clarify the key strategies you can follow to increase the chances of achieving the specific goal;
To do the necessary practical tasks required to implement these strategies on the way towards achieving the specific goal;
To consistently deliver high professional standards on the way towards achieving the specific goal.
Let’s return to the activity you want to pursue. What are the basic things you must do to keep doing the maintenance? How can you make sure you keep doing these things?
