
There are many ways to live life. One approach is to recognise the people you can rely on in your personal and professional life. It is then to continue to build with these people and, when appropriate, get positive results.

Personal Life
Who are the people that you can rely on in your personal life? What are the things you can rely on these people to do? If appropriate, how can you continue to build with these people?
Different people will write different positive things that they can rely on different people to do. They may write, for example, some of the following things.
Person A: I can rely on them to be positive, kind and encouraging. Such as by being good at listening and, if I ask, sharing possible creative ideas for tackling challenges.
Person B: I can rely on them to helpful in a practical way. Such as by, when appropriate, helping with transport to my hospital visits and doing shopping.
Person C: I can rely on them to be supportive and discreet. Such as in the past when they have helped me with financial support and also when one of our children had challenges.
If you wish, try tackling the exercise on this theme. This invites you: a) to focus on one of the people that you can rely on in your personal life; b) to describe the positive things that you can rely on them to do.

There may, of course, be some people you can rely on to do negative things or let you down. There is no need to write these down, but it can be useful to take heed of those warnings.
Professional Life
Who are the people that you can rely on in your professional life? What are the things you can rely on these people to do? If appropriate, how can you continue to build with these people?
Much may depend on the kind of work you do. If you work as a freelancer, you may depend on people who provide services such as maintenance, accountancy or other contributions.
One CEO followed elements of this approach to describe some of the people they relied on in their business. They describe some of these people in the following way.
Person A: I can rely on them in their role as Chief Operating Officer. They have built on operations team that makes sure the organisation runs well. They also anticipate and manage potential future challenges.
Person B: I can rely on them in their role at the Reception Desk. They are brilliant at customer service and making people feel welcome. One visiting CEO said: “That was the best reception area experience I have ever had.”
Person C: I can rely on them in their role as Customer Service Director. They act as a trusted advisor to customers and orchestrate teams that help the customers to achieve success.

Positive Results
Imagine that you have described some of the people you can rely on in your personal and professional life. Looking ahead, how would you like to continue to build with some of these people?
Let’s start with your personal life. If appropriate, you may aim either: a) to spend more time with a particular person; b) to encourage a particular person; c) to do things that may help both of a person and yourself to get positive results.
Let’s move on to your professional life. Imagine that you lead a team. Who are the people you can rely on in the team? What can you rely on them to do? What can you do to fill any gaps in the team?
