There are many ways to do fine work. One approach is to use your imagination to share ideas and inspiration with people. Different people do this in different ways.

Some do it when working as counsellors, educators, writers, artists, mentors or in other roles. Some aim to pass on knowledge through books, films, television programmes or other vehicles.

Such people start by using their imagination. They focus on: a) the specific situation; b) the specific people and their goals in the situation; c) the specific ideas and inspiration they can share in the situation.  

Imagine that a person wants to follow elements of this approach in their own way. They can use their imagination to focus on the following themes.  

The Specific Situation

The first step is for the person to focus on the specific situation where they may want to share ideas. Different people may aim to do this in different situations.

They may be writing an article, teaching a course, leading a workshop or running a coaching session. They may be making a film, appearing in a television programme or sharing ideas in another situation.

The person may also find it useful to get some background about the situation. For example:

They may be helping people – a person or a group of people – by providing coaching or other services;

They may have been asked to contribute to a workshop, a seminar or another event;

They may be choosing to share ideas through a blog, an article or another vehicle.

It can also be useful for them to focus on the following things. They can clarify the reasons why either: a) they have been asked to share ideas, or; b) they personally want to share ideas in the situation.

This is where a person can aim to do their best to set things up to succeed. One approach is for them to do lots of research and also use their imagination when taking the following steps.

First, to find out more about the people – the person or the group of people – who will be in the situation.

Second, to explore more about the topics that they may interested in exploring and also more about their personal or professional goals.

Let’s return to your own life and work. Imagine that you are aiming to share some ideas and maybe even some inspiration in a particular situation.

You may be aiming to do a mentoring session, run a workshop, write an article or do another activity. Looking ahead, it can be useful to explore the following framework.

Who is the person or the group of people with whom I want to share ideas? What do I know about them? What is their back story? What may be happening in their world – in their personal or professional lives?

What are their strengths? What may be some of the challenges they are facing? What may be their personal or professional goals? What else may be happening in their lives?

What may be some of the topics they want to explore? What may be the reasons why they want to explore these? What may be the practical ideas and tools they want? What for them would make it a successful session?

Exploring these themes involves having a sense of empathy and seeing the world from another person’s point of view. It also involves using your imagination to explore their current situation, their challenges and their long-term picture of success.

They can clarify the specific ideas and maybe even the inspiration they can share with people in the situation.

They can clarify how to share these things in a way that resonates with people and they can use to achieve their goals.

What may be the things that you may want to share with people to help them to achieve their goals? Looking ahead, it can be useful to explore the following framework.

What are the topics that people – the person or group of people – may want to explore? What may be the challenges they face? What may be the goals they want to achieve in their personal or professional lives?

What is the knowledge I can share that may help them to achieve their goals? What are the positive models and practical tools I can share? How can I share these by giving examples that may resonate with people?

How can I maybe even do this in an inspiring way? How can I pass on implementation tools that work? How can I help people to integrate the learning in a way they can use to achieve their pictures of success?
