The Being Professional Rather Than Being In Love With The Idea Of Being A Professional Approach

There are many ways to do fine work. One approach is for a person to be professional in the way they behave. They may do this when being a writer, athlete, educator, leader or in another role.

Some people take another approach. They are in love with the idea of being a certain kind of professional. But they are not prepared to do what is required in the particular role.

Person A, for example, behaves in a professional way and is prepared to take responsibility for leading their team. They act as a positive model, make good decisions and enable their team to achieve success.

Person B wants the status of being a leader but does not behave in a professional way. They fail to accept responsibility, make poor decisions and do not know how to build a successful team.

Person C behaves professionally when aiming to be a freelance writer. They follow a daily rhythm and produce material that is published on their blog, on other websites, in magazines and in other media.

Person D says they want to be a writer. They do not follow daily working habits and do not produce much material. They do not adapt to the new working environment for writers and are waiting to be discovered.

Person E is an entrepreneur. They focus on a specific goal, follow daily disciplines and build a fine team that delivers great work. They have a pattern of building and selling successful businesses.

Person F considers themselves an entrepreneur. They flick from idea to idea, however, and simply talk a good game. They start lots of projects, do not follow through and fail to build teams that deliver the goods.

Can you think of a specific activity where you want to be professional? This does not necessarily mean you make a living from it, but you do behave in a professional way. If you wish, try tackling the exercise on this theme. This invites you to complete the following sentences.
